BY INFLUENCING PUBLIC POLICY, WE PROTECT MARINE LIFE

Introducing Juliette, 17 years old, founder of the movement:

It was while growing up near the port of Boulogne-sur Mer that Juliette decided to protect marine life. Now a student at Sciences Po, she fights to stop a system that is destroying our oceans in the short term. Juliette has met scientists, politicians and maritime professionals.

In July 2021, Juliette cycled to meet ocean protection actors in the Bay of Biscay and made a video campaign entitled « In search of waves », in French « En Quête de Vagues« . In November 2021, his project was selected for the Sapiens incubator.

Her action plan is ambitious: to influence public policies on the issues of industrialisation of the sector, the subsidy mechanism and the allocation of fishing quotas.

EU Young Ocean AdvocateJuliette has been recognised as a Young Ocean Champion by the European Union. With dozens of other accredited young people in the EU, coordinated protection projects are emerging from the Black Sea to the Arctic Ocean.

OUR GOALS:

70% of the fish catch is taken by 5% of industrial fishermen, who generate 4 times more pollution and receive 5 times more subsidies than small-scale fishermen.

Consequences: marine life is collapsing and 100,000 artisanal fishermen have disappeared in 20 years. Should we extend this system further or reform it?

Our objectives for action are:

  • To carry out impact and transparency studies of the fisheries sector;
  • To fight for reasoned and non-destructive fishing;
  • To federate an international group of young people, capable of influencing public policy on subsidies, quotas and legislation.

MANIFESTO:

The ocean is emptying at an unprecedented rate: in 50 years, half of the marine life has disappeared. Mega-salters have replaced 100,000 inshore fishermen in the last 20 years. Artisanal fishing jobs are becoming as scarce as the fish.

Everyone knows this, but people still believe that consumers are responsible, or that « it’s too technical »…

No, there is nothing technical about it. Nevertheless, our entire system (political and economic) is designed to continue this macabre dance: the European Commission sets 60% of fishing quotas without respecting the recommendations of scientists, and 80% of public money dedicated to fishing goes to industry. Thus, in order to preserve the jobs and traditions of small-scale fisheries, it is necessary to change these unfair mechanisms.

It is no longer time to cry over our dolphins and schools of silver bream. Tackling the roots of this collapse is essential. We need to act to promote non-destructive fishing, better distribution of quotas and subsidies, and the systematic respect of scientific advice at the European level.

We believe that an international citizens’ collective has the capacity to improve policy models. Together we can make a significant impact to protect the beauty hidden under the surface of the seas.
